Professor Ali Al-Shamlan, KFAS Director General, conceived the idea at a Harvard Conference in August 1991, during which Dr Farouk El-Baz (Center for Remote Sensing, Boston University) illustrated the environmental effects of the Gulf War using satellite imagery. The Atlas was produced over a 2 year period by El-Baz, and Dr Mohammad Al-Sarawi of Kuwait University. It covers a background to satellite imagery and description of the Arabian Peninsula; Kuwait's physical and human environment; the environmental effects of the Gulf War; a geographic classification of Kuwait's provinces; and a list of sources.
