Publishers blue cloth binding with gilt titles to spine and black titles and colour illustrations to front board in good condition with a little shelf wear to top & tail of spine, some rubbing to tips and edges and a little fading to the colour illustrations to front board. Inside cracked to ppviii but binding still tight and solid with no loose pages. Ink gift inscription to title page dated "1901" and Ralfe Whistler's bookplate to front pastedown, with all pages in very good, clean and bright condition with the very odd mark. A very nice copy of this scarce 1st edition that was first serialised in Home Magazine in 1898 and later belonged to the late East Sussex naturalist Ralfe Whistler and was in his famous dodo memorabilia collection.
