EA. - «Albert Gobat, geboren 21.5.1843 Tramelan, gestorben 16.3.1914 Bern, ref., später (während des Kulturkampfs) konfessionslos, von Crémines. [.] G. besuchte die Primarschule in Tramelan, die Herrnhuter Internatsschule Kornthal bei Stuttgart und das Progymnasium in La Neuveville. 1860 kaufte G.s Vater das Schloss Ebenrain bei Sissach, wohin die Fam. nun zog. G. absolvierte das Pädagogium Basel (1862 Maturität) und studierte 1862-64 Rechtswissenschaften, Geschichte und Literatur an der Univ. Basel, promovierte 1864 in Heidelberg (Dr. iur.) und setzte seine Rechtsstudien in Paris fort. 1866 habilitierte er sich in Basel. 1867 trat er in das Advokaturbüro von Niklaus Niggeler und Emil Vogt in Bern ein, erwarb das Fürsprecherpatent an der Univ. Bern und war dann Advokat in Bern. 1867-68 las er an der Univ. Bern als PD franz. Zivilrecht. 1868 übernahm er die Anwaltspraxis des freisinnigen Nationalrats Edouard Carlin in Delsberg.G. startete seine polit. Karriere 1882 als freisinniger Berner Grossrat. Im damals noch zu Bern gehörenden Jura entfremdete er sich durch seine Haltung im Kulturkampf sowie in den Fragen der Trennung zwischen Kirche und Staat und der Aufhebung der Klöster zunehmend von seinen kath. Mitbürgern. 1882-1912 amtierte er auch als Regierungsrat, wobei er bis 1906 die Erziehungsdirektion, dann die Direktion des Inneren führte. Als Erziehungsdirektor schuf sich G. durch seinen autoritären Führungsstil neue Feinde. Dies zeigte sich v.a. auf dem Gebiet der Hochschulpolitik (Ernennung von Professoren, Aufnahme russ. Studenten, Förderung der Naturwissenschaften, v.a. der Medizin) und der Gymnasialreform (in Frage stellen der Alten Sprachen). Unbestritten waren hingegen seine Verdienste um die Schulreform (Primarschulgesetz von 1894), die Reorganisation der Lehrerbildungsanstalten, die materielle Besserstellung der Lehrer und den Bau des neuen Hochschulgebäudes. 1883 wurde G. in den Verfassungsrat gewählt. 1889-1914 leitete er die Aufsichtskommission des Bern. Hist. Museums. Auf eidg. Ebene politisierte G. 1884-90 im Ständerat und 1890-1914 im Nationalrat. Um das Amt des Vizepräsidenten des Nationalrats und um einen Sitz im Bundesgericht (1905) bewarb er sich vergeblich. Im National- und Ständerat trat er als Sprecher der Komm. für das einheitl. Zivilgesetzbuch hervor, v.a. aber als Gegner des Rückkaufs der Eisenbahnen und des neuen Gotthardvertrags. Er gehörte dem Verwaltungsrat der Jura-Bern-Luzern-Bahn, der Jura-Simplon-Bahn, der Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon-Bahn und der SBB an. Als Mitglied der Liga für Frieden und Freiheit setzte G. mit Hilfe seiner Tochter Marguerite einen grossen Teil seiner Energie für den Pazifismus ein. 1892-1909 amtierte er als erster Generalsekretär der Interparlamentar. Union für den Frieden. Zusammen mit Elie Ducommun erhielt er 1902 den Friedensnobelpreis. Nach dem Tod von Generalsekretär Ducommun hatte G. 1906 bis zu seinem Tod die Leitung des Internat. Friedensbüros in Bern inne, das 1910 den Friedensnobelpreis erhielt. Auf internat. Kongressen kämpfte er vor dem 1. Weltkrieg für die Schiedsgerichtsidee und die Abrüstung. 1904, anlässlich eines Empfangs im Weissen Haus, machte er bei Präs. Theodore Roosevelt einen entsprechenden Vorstoss. Besonders am Herzen lag ihm die Versöhnung zwischen Frankreich und dem Dt. Reich, wie seine erfolglosen Bemühungen um die Lösung der Elsass-Lothringen-Frage zeigten. Die Tragik im persönl. Wirken G.s liegt darin, dass er als ein der Friedensidee verpflichteter national gesinnter Schweizer und Kosmopolit da und dort mehr polarisierte als schlichtete. In bürgerl. Kreisen galt der Pazifist bis zuletzt als eine Art freigeistiger Mitläufer des Sozialismus. G. hinterliess auch ein reiches publizist. Werk. Bekannt wurde v.a. seine "Histoire de la Suisse racontée au peuple" (1900). 1903 Dr. h.c. der Univ. Bern» (HLS). 1400 gr. Schlagworte: Reisen - Nordamerika, Geschichte - 1900 - 45.
