In questo volume si propone una scelta ragionata di testi sulla pedagogia di William Godwin, scrittore inglese (1756-1836). Dopo alcuni romanzi dimenticati e alcuni saggi storici, pubblicò l'opera per cui è noto: «The enquiry concerning the principles of political justice» (1793). Empirista e razionalista, Godwin tende qui ad accentuare nella concezione della libertà l'aspetto individualistico, quale si era venuto elaborando nel corso delle lotte per la tolleranza religiosa (dopo varie esperienze, egli era passato infine al socinianesimo). Ogni vincolo della società e della tradizione era per G. un limite alla libertà dell'uomo che leggi, governi, istituti valevano solo a corrompere nella sua innata propensione al bene. La tesi di Godwin, che svolge e sistematizza la tendenza "eretica" del liberalismo inglese del '700, esercitò notevole influsso sul radicalismo politico-filosofico del secolo successivo.
