Title within woodcut border incorporating printer device and with woodcut of St Francis receiving the stigmata (repeated other 3 times in text), device at the end, at verso of titlepage a beautiful full-page woodcut of St. Francis adoring the crucified Christ, at the foot of a tree. ff. Some 17th cent. ms. entries on title, 2nd leaf and last leaf.First edition of this crucial work for franciscanism, composed between 1385 and 1390, and officially approved by the Order on Aug. 2, 1399, during the General Chapter of Assisi; it develops until the last consequences the theme of the parallelism (conformity) between the life of Jesus and that of St Francis, the only one among all the saints to approach the divine model of Christ in a total way. The work, divided into three books, profits from most of the literary sources available in the second half of the fourteenth century, including Spiritual Franciscan writers; with a series of synthetic parallels between the two. About the splendid woodcut, Mortimer notes that "This representation of the material of the text in the form of a tree was part of the original manuscript submitted by Bartholomaeus for approbation in 1399" (Harvard, It. n.44).
