Wegmarke vom 18. ins 19. Jahrhundert! - Schweppe verfasste sein Werk an der Schnittstelle von historischer Rechtsschule und älterer Literatur. In seinem Vorwort verweist er auf die ältere Literatur: ".umgekehrt ist recht eigentlich dabei vorausgesetzt, daß dem Leser die Schrift von Bach über die äußere und von Heineccius für die innere Rechtsgeschichte, so wie der Hauboldsche Abriß für die Litteratur, immer zur Hand sind.". Die nachfolgenden Auseinandersetzungen mit Gustav Hugo bedauert Schweppe: "Jeder, der mich kennt, weiß, daß ich Niemanden anfeinde.". Dabei rügt er den jungen Puchta, der "über meinen Streit mit dem Herrn Hugo auf eine sehr vorlaute und zudringliche Weise seine Stimme abgegeben.". - Schweppe (1783-1829) studierte seit 1800 in Göttingen, promovierte dort als Schüler von Hugo und wurde Privatdozent. Seine Ernennnung zum Extraordinarius erfolgte 1805 in Kiel, wo er 1814 zum Ordinarius für römisches Recht ernannt worden ist. Im Jahre 1818 kehrte er auf einen Lehrstuhl nach Göttingen zurück.
