This book promises to become a fundamental/foundational text for the field of leadership thinking and research. This three-part book reveals more about the qualities of managers and leaders than any other single source. Anyone who presumes to do anything in this area will, of necessity, need to have this handbook. Kenneth E. Clark was one of the American Psychological Association's (APA's) most active members over a 50-year period. He received his doctorate in psychology from the Ohio State University in 1940 and shortly thereafter joined the faculty of the Department of Psychology at the University of Minnesota. During World War II, he moved to Washington, DC, and, as a civilian, worked for the U.S. Army and then the Army Air Force; subsequently, he worked as a commissioned officer with the U.S. Navy. He assessed the talents and skills of sailors and then assigned them to occupational specialties, exhibiting a general interest in talent and assessment that he was to retain for the remainder of his career. Returning to the University of Minnesota after the war, Ken served as department chairman from 1957 to 1960 and then served as associate dean of the graduate school. In 1960, he moved to the University of Colorado at Boulder as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. In the spring of 1963, Kenneth moved to the University of Rochester, again as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, a position he held until his retirement in 1980. Beyond APA, Kenneth also represented psychology in an amazing array of roles. He was a member of the President's National Medal of Science Committee, president of the American Board of Examiners in Professional Psychology, chair of the Association for the Advancement of Psychology, chair of the American Conference of Academic Deans, chair of the Research Advisory Board for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a member of the Army Scientific Advisory Panel, and chair of the Veterans Administration's Area Advisory Council in Psychology. Kenneth received numerous formal awards. Among them were the Annual Outstanding Research Award from the American Personnel and Guidance Association in 1963, the E. K. Strong Memorial Gold Medal for excellence in psychological testing in 1967, appointment as a honorary life fellow by the Canadian Psychological Association in 1968, the Centennial Achievement Award from the Ohio State University in 1970, and the Gold Medal Award of the American Psychological Foundation in 19.

A nice association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the front free endpaper: "To Kenton Miller, In appreciation for your fine work as a leader in the conservation movement and to protect and support national parks all over the worl…d. Bob Cahn, Horace M Albright, Dec. 1985." The inscription is in Cahn's hand but Albright has signed his name, which is uncommon. Kenton Miller was an important environmentalist on a global lvel, serving as director general for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for five years among other roles with the organization and other conservation groups. He is described as "a mentor to many conservationists around the world." Across his career, he helped establish three national and is the author ofPlanning National Parks for Eco-Development in Latin America. (See a more extensive biography for the IUCN by his wife, Sue Miller, also an environmentalist). A particularly nice association as such. Horace Albright was the second director of the US National Park Service, and much could be written about his accomplishments and how he steered the NPS; he was awarded a Presidential Medal for Freedom. He was 95 when this book was published and died two years later in 1987. Thus likely scarce signed by him in any edition (what you see, instead, is copies signed by his co-author ["as told to"] Robert Cahn, who won a Pulitzer Prize in journalism for reporting on the National Park Service). With blurbs by Alfred Runte and David Brower among others. A near fine copy with a touch of dust soiling to the top face of the text block. "Personal Library of Kenton R. Miller" stamps on the outer face, the FFEP, and the title page. In a very good jacket with some staining to spine, wear to corners, and a one-inch tear to base of spine .
