Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The novels of Samuel Richardson are the essential topic of this book. Its main aim is to use Bakhtin's definition of polyphony as a way into Richardson's work and, in turn, to provide a basis from which to revise Bakhtin. After tracing the development of psychological realism in the eighteenth-century novel and the growing potential for autonomy in the fictional character in general, the book goes on to examine the potential for polyphony which first emerges in Pamela and reaches its height in Clarissa .Between editions of this momentous novel, Richardson felt compelled to make frantic attempts to control the reader's interpretation of the text. Lovelace - the villain of Clarissa - acquires a degree of autonomy that bears startlingly vivid testimony to the plurality of human identity itself. Sir Charles Grandison , Richardson's last novel, is a vivid retreat from the powerful effect of Lovelace.

Precious opal is a rainbow made tangible. Its spectral blaze of color moves, changes, intensifies, fades, or disappears with the slightest change of perspective. Opal's intriguing play of color and unique atomic arrangement have made it the subject of scientific probing from early optics in the 1850s to a high-tech photonics today. Equally challenging has been discovering opal's place in history. Opal, both precious and common, is found in disparate environments from the unbearable heat of the Australian outback to the higher elevations of the Canadian Rockies, from a centuries-old site in Slovakia to a number of little-known places in the American west. A natural, wearable stone with magical depth, movement, and color, opal is a truly phenomenal gemstone.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Alphonso, Alex (illustratore). nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - A young journalist is given the assignment to verify the existence of a large, flesh-eating spider roaming the Amazon's underbrush. The giant eight-legged creature was rumored to have attacked livestock and people with lightning speed, and always during a full moon. With Alberto as his Peruvian guide, the young reporter sets out on a journey to discover the truth for himself.Alberto was a former bush pilot who crash-landed his small single-engine plane while on a mercy mission over the Amazon. He was grateful when the fierce and reclusive Toromona tribe saw him 'fall from the sky' -- he was grateful too that they spared his life and nursed him back to health. He learned to speak their language and took part in their religious ceremonies. The villagers told Alberto the spider was the size of a mid-sized dog -- with eight legs bristling with hair, and a powerful jaw armed with a deadly pair of four-inch, black hollow fangs -- fangs that injected a powerful venom and could dispatch a fully grown man in seconds. The Toromona called the creature Ah-bee-too -- a name that meant 'black hollow fang' in their language. They believed it was the supernatural forces of a solid gold crescent-shaped necklace worn by their Chieftain that protected them against the creature's deadly fangs.Alberto had never seen the giant spider, but he had seen the Chieftain's necklace -- and saw it as an opportunity for quick riches. He was about to learn that the Amazon does not give up her secrets easily, or to just anyone.
