An early edition of this particularly important edition of the concordance of The Bible, noted for its use as a scholarly tool and thoroughness of content. A Complete Concordance to The Holy Scriptures, generally referred to as 'Cruden's Concordance' is a highly influential concordance of the King James Bible. The work is a remarkable feat, having been solely composed by Cruden. Cruden began the work in 1735, whilst working as a bookseller in London, completing the majority of the work within a year. Since publication the work has never been out of print, with this particular edition being the third and last of the editions to be published in the author's lifetime. Whilst there had been a number of concordances printed before this work, Cruden's is considered as the first scholarly aid, credited for its consistency and completeness. The work is also noted as being the first to show the surrounding sentences, rather than just the verse referenced, which allowed for greater literary context. This particular copy is a very early example of a highly influential concordance, considered the first of true academic note and the last of which to be published within the author's lifetime. In a full calf binding. Externally a trifle rubbed with front board and first two leaves detached but present. Rear board is held by cords only and may detach with further handling.
