Kipnis was a member of both the Berlin Staatsoper (1930-1935) and the Vienna Staatsoper (1935-1938); he became an American citizen in 1934. "By then he had established himself everywhere as an outstanding Wagner and Mozart bass and a highly distinguished interpreter of Italian and Russian roles.
