Preferred subscriber quarto (there were also two folio variants but not on luxury paper, nor with the extra engravings and woodcuts). With the list of subscribers to Volume I, including the king, prince and princess of England and many prominent public figures of the day such as the Duke of Argyll, the Duke of Devonshire, Lord Cowper, Duke of Marlborough and prestigious colleges like Oxford - with subscribers buying up to 10 sets. Five volumes Translated into English by Alexander Pope with the assistance of William Broome and Elijah Fenton. Bound in beautiful contemporary 18th century full fine speckled calf. Boards with double gilt filets surrounding an intricate gilt lattice pattern with royal emblems like crowns and fleur-des-lis. Spine with five raised bands separating compartments ruled and tooled in gilt with gilt-lettered morocco spine labels in compartments two and three. All board edges tooled with gilt rolls. All page edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Sewn-in black silk ribbon placeholders. Quarto, 11" x 9". CONDITION REPORT The five volumes are in NEAR FINE internal condition for 300-year-old books. Complete. Scarce to find quartos in contemporary binding that are not rebacked for this title. Exterior and binding: Firm binding, tight pages, a few joints with slight cracking emerging, sunning and darkening of spines with dry leather, darkened top edge (per usual), quite light rubbing to edges. Boards with rubbing, scratches and some shallow pitting. The board and edge gilt work is remarkably well-preserved for nearly a 300-year-old binding. In particular, it is very scarce to find the bottom edge gilt rolls from hundreds of years ago mostly intact. Sewn-in black silk ribbon placeholders also in very nice condition. Interior: The text pages are gorgeous, remarkably bright and white like the day they were first made. Certainly, the nicest example I've seen for this title. (Usually the best examples are lightly toned with some light foxing and areas of toning/browning within text.). Some fading to endpapers. Some grubbiness to the blanks. An endpaper or blank of each volume with the armorial 18th century bookplates of Stephen George Kemble and Thomas Bigge (1766-1851), an English political writer and activist. Some light scattered foxing on blanks. Text itself almost completely without foxing and is quite clean overall with remarkably little marginal thumbing and soiling, only an occasional marginal finger smudge or spots of dust soiling. A few leaves with heavier soiling/spots of soiling. Mostly light signs of handling. MINOR ISSUES TO NOTE, ELSE FINE: VOLUME I: First 1/8 of book with both some light water dampening a.
