Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. FIFTY HAND COLOURED AQUATINT PLATES, EACH WITH AN ACCOMPANYING LEAF OF TEXT First edition, 4to, in full black morocco, spine gilt titled, lower and fore edges untrimmed, title leaf, contents leaf, & 50 hand coloured engraved plates, each with a guard leaf and a descriptive leaf, the text printed on rectos only, edges of binding rubbed, some foxing and soiling, edges uncut, upper hinge weak. (243*175 mm). (Colas 2357. Hiler p16. Lipperheide 987). The occasional watermarks range from an unclear date prior to 1810 up to 1821 (the latter on guard leaves only). The subject of these delicately coloured engravings range from the King to a chimney sweep, from a Knight of the Garter to a Billingsgate fish woman; so not only the costumes but the many strata of English society are depicted. William Alexander was an artist and drawing master who became the first keeper of the prints and drawings at the British Museum. These plates are generally not as picturesque as those of Alexander's similarly titles and almost simultaneous costume books on China, Russia, and Turkey; but the ceremonial and military outfits can be rather spectacular.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. Special Edition. vi, [2], 60 hand-coloured engraved plates, each plate accompanied by a descriptive text, (approximately 60 pages of text), later crimson full morocco by Schifferson, lightly rubbed, title gilt on raised spine with red and green labels, scattered light spotting and one or two closed tears, mainly to text, printed for James Goodwin, by W. Lewis, second edition, circa 1814. A small-scale version of Alexander's The Costumes of Turkey (1802), engravings and descriptions including dervishes and dancers, musicians and porters, Arabs, Jews, Greeks, and Tartars etc. plus eunuchs, odalisks, other women, servants, a musician, officers of the Janissaries, soldiers, a naval admiral, the grand vizier and several tradesmen. First published in French as Costume de la Turquie and in English in 1802 as The Costumes of Turkey. Attributed to the French artist Octavien Dalvimart about whom little is known (the Preface). It seems the text is by another, sometimes attributed to William Alexander, as one of the descriptions includes a comment made by Octavien Dalvimart. The English artist William Alexander accompanied the Macartney Embassy to China in 1792 as draughtsman and in 1808 was appointed Assistant Keeper of antiquities in the British Museum. The illustrations in the two-volume China work are after the English painter, illustrator and engraver William Alexander, who travelled to China as draughtsman with Lord Macartney's Embassy to the Emperor in 1792-1794.
