Illustrated by Alfred Ashley including 5 part fold out to front old London Bridge and includes a further 25 illustrations, some with dramatic depictions such as The Abduction (of a young maid) The Death (a man is dragged along the ground by a horse) and The Fire On The Bridge, (chaotic crowd scenes). Seams beginning to crack but not split. Hinges sound and all pages tight in binding. Interior has small pencil mark otherwise clean with no writing, marks or tears and all pages tight in binding.Navy board covers blind stamped, small tear at spine base.

Octavo, rebound in three-quarter 19th century morocco, raised bands, marbled boards. Lacks the publisher's catalogue at the rear. Short closed tear in bottom edge of engraved title-page. Spine dulled, and wear at cover edges. The Clodpole plate (from opposite page 66) appears as a frontispiece opposite the illustrated title-page. The artist, Alfred Ashley, had published THE ART OF ETCHING ON COPPER in 1849 [Sadleir 1223].

Just about fine in a toned, very good dust jacket with the red spine lettering sunned, and a few tiny chips and tears at the extremities. A play about the conflicts of a Russian nobleman in a country ruled by the Mad Czar and threatened by Napoleon. Basis for one of the most elusive of all "lost films," Ernest Lubitsch's 1928 production with Emil Jannings, Florence Vidor, and Lewis Stone. It was a 1930 nominee for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Stone, and two other Oscars. It won only for screenplay a silent film in the first year of the talkies. Some fragments of the film exist but the complete version has been lost.
