Bovet put up for sale all of his autograph collection excepting autographs of composers and singers. This auction catalogue by É. Charavay lists 2,137 lots in ten sections: heads of governments…, statesmen and political personnages, French Revolution, military figures, scientists and explorers, writers, dramatic artists, painters-sculptors-architects, Hugenots, and women. Entries are usually annotated; many are accompanied by facsimiles of signatures, letters or parts of letters, and, in the section on painters et al., by drawings and sketches. Autographs are mostly French, but there are others, for ex., items from six American presidents and various British statesmen, from German literary figures, etc. A well-designed catalogue with indexes. Originally issued in three parts (but consecutively numbered and paginated). Plates follow text. Bovet, Alfred (illustratore).

La partie consacrée aux peintres, sculpteurs, graveurs et architectes est abondamment illustrée de reproductions de dessins et croquis. Les autographes sont surtout français, mais on trouve des lettres de six présidents américains, d'hommes d'État britanniques, de figures littéraires allemandes, etc. Cet ouvrage comporte une passionnante préface d'Etienne Charavay présentant l'ensemble de cette collection et abordant très en détail la recherche d'autographes, l'authenticité des documents et leurs prix, les collections publiques, les divers genres de collections, et les différents classements possibles. Ein Exemplar soll dem Empfänger des Briefes zugeeignet werden: "[….] j'estimerais á grand honneur, Excellence, d'oser vous offrir un exemplaire de lire, et régulièrement flatté, á la pensée que l'illustre historien de Marie-Antoinette, puisse trouver quelque plaisir á parcourir ce volume." - Alfred Bovet war 1866 durch Heirat Teil der Industriellenfamilie Peugeot geworden; 1869 begann er eine umfangreiche Sammlung von bibliophilen Büchern, Portraits und Autographen anzulegen, die er 1884/85 von Etienne Charavay (1848-1899) in Paris versteigern ließ, wozu ein in Beschreibung und Ausstattung mustergültiger Katalog erschien, der "einen bis heute nicht wieder erreichten Höhepunkt in der buchmäßigen Darstellung einer Autographensammlung" (Mecklenburg, Vom Autographensammeln, S. 29) bildet. - Auf Briefpapier mit gedr. kalligr.
