Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. Published by Chatto and Windus in 1875, here is the first hardback printing of Wilkie Collins' ANTONINA: or THE FALL OF ROME (New Edition) illustrated by Alfred Concanen. Green cloth binding, gilt, black and green decoration and lettering, 420 pages plus a 32 page catalogue of other Chatto and Windus publications the book is in good condition (which should have been very good to near fine) has it not been for an inexplicable 1 inch tear to the half title page near the base. There is also some foxing/ browning to the first few pages and to the outside of the page edges and the name of a previous owner stamped in purple ink to the top of the full title page. Revered Oxford scholar Anthony Cockshut has also written his name in pencil to the front free end paper. Otherwise the covers are beautiful and the illustrations are bright and vibrant. A very decent offering.

No Binding. Condizione: Very Good. Concanen, Alfred (1835-86) (illustratore). This is a piece consisting of six sheets. The first, which is the cover, the full page color lithograph by Alfred Concanen. The following four pages (2 sheets) are the musical score for voice and piano, with the text underneath. The last page is the entire text. The entire work is protected by an acid-free mylar envelope. 35 x 26 cm. It is too large for the scanner and so it is reproduced here in two sections. The scanner's platen is also not wide enough to accommodate the entire width of the sheet so the margins of the images here are cut off. This is an anti semitic song. The Moses and Aaron are not the brothers from the Bible, but two British Jews identified as such by their names. The last stanza tells us that Moses is flush with money because he stole it from the plate passed around at church. The OCLC does not list even a single library worldwide that owns this item. G.H. MacDermott (1845-1901) was born in Islington, and named John Farrell. He had left home by 1861 to join the navy and in 1866 married Mary Ann Stradwick, by whom he had a son. From humble beginnings MacDermott became a wealthy man. In 1883 he lived in Lambeth with a young actress Annie Milburn, daughter of actor James Hartley Milburn, and had another four children, all of whom adopted his stage name of MacDermott. He later became a successful theatrical agent and managed several famous music halls. In an obituary on 9 May 1901, the Daily Telegraph called G. H. MacDermott the last lion comique, artists whose stage appearance resplendent in evening dress contrasted with the cloth cap image of most of their music hall contemporaries.
