Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Elephant Folio 23" tall; 52 pages; A run of all twelve issues of the Saint Albans News for the 1954-1955 academic year bound in tan boards with a blue cloth spine and gilt lettering at front board. Contents in very nice condition, clean and tight; the boards have some fading and stains. The Saint Albans News, the official student publication of St. Albans School, was founded in 1930 making it one of the oldest student newspapers in the country. Among the notable students of St. Albans are Al Gore, John Kerry, Neil Bush, Harold Ford, Jr., Gore Vidal and many Roosevelts. This bound volume covers the academic year in which St. Albans integrated; it was one of the earliest private schools in Washington to do so. In addition to the usual coverage of athletics and school government and administration, the paper presents news and commentary on the mid-term national elections, foreign affairs, book reviews, editorials, profiles of various students, etc. Alfred Friendly, Jr. served as editor-in-chief during the 1954-55 season, who later became a reporter with Newsweek and the New York Times. His father Alfred Friendly, Sr. (1911-1983) had started in journalism as a reporter with the Washington "Post" in 1939 and became the Post's Managing Editor in 1955; he played a major role in taking the 'Post' from a local paper to a journal of national and international importance. In 1967 he covered the Mideast War for the Post in a series of articles for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1968.

Alfred Friendly Jr. This work studies of the relationship between pollution and health in the Soviet Union. Foreword by Lester Brown. A look at the impending health and environmental disasters in the Soviet Union discusses the shortage of appropriate surgical instruments, the dangerous concentration of pollution in some cities, the prevalent use of the banned pesticide DDT, and more. Murray Feshbach (August 8, 1929 October 25, 2019) was an American scholar focusing on the demographics of the Soviet Union and demographics of Russia, including population, health, and environment. He was a Senior Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center. Alfred Friendly, Jr. American, b. 1938. Genres: Documentaries/Reportage, Writing/Journalism. Career: New York Times, NYC, correspondent; Newsweek, NYC, worked as correspondent and bureau chief in Moscow. Writer on health and environmental issues for the U.S. Congress and the World Bank. Publications: (with R.L. Goldfarb) Crime and Publicity: The Impact of News on the Administration of Justice, 1967; (ed. with E. Yankelevich) Andrei D. Sakharov, Alarm and Hope, 1978; (with M. Feshbach) Ecocide in the USSR: Health and Nature under Siege, 1992; Editor, Gribkov, Anatoli I., and William Y. Smith, Operation ANADYR: U.S. and Soviet Generals Recount the Cuban Missile Crisis, 1994. Derived from an article in The Library Journal by Robert Decker, Los Angeles. Demographer Feshbach and journalist Friendly show how 70 years of unregulated industrial pollution have both devastated the Soviet environment and created a host of medical problems that Russia's primitive health service is inadequate to handle. Having turned a vast proportion of its farmland and forests, lakes, and rivers into toxic waste dumps, Russia now has neither the technology nor the money to clean up Chernobyl and the Aral Sea, not to mention the many less-famous disaster areas documented here. The authors conclude there will be no real progress short of a total cultural transformation. Well written, this will interest many well-informed readers.
