Las transformaciones de la imagen de España en el exterior, y la mirada del otro, han sufrido una serie incontable de variaciones, en función de la situación política, económica y cultural no sólo de la propia España sino del decurso internacional. El presente volumen se remite, por razones obvias de espacio y utilidad, a la secuencia contemporánea comenzada en el siglo XIX y su deriva posterior. Su propósito es contextualizar de dónde se viene, dónde se está y hacia dónde deben dirigirse los trabajos encaminados a lograr que «la mirada del otro» se adecue a la realidad de hoy en España, sin ignorar estereotipos pero salvando tópicos y lugares comunes. La imagen de España en el exterior ni es una pintoresca entelequia ni una precipitada reinvención, en la medida en que España forma parte de un restringido grupo de naciones que ha generado una fuerte y marcada imagen en su dilatada historia. La imagen que el conjunto de la nación proyecte en otros países y culturas no sólo es esencial sino decisiva de cara a su posición internacional. La nueva imagen de España, la del umbral del siglo XXI, ha de servir de soporte de los activos y la acción española en el exterior.
