Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1942. [2] pages reprint ([14] pages, 125 plates) [8], 88 pages illustrations. A very gently ex libris copy: a small hand written call number to the base of the spine and a perforated ownership stamp to the title page. Still a handsome book in the original light blue cloth. Nearly fine save the t…wo library marks.

Condizione: Fair. The Third edition (hardback). Folio (37cm by 25cm), 24pp. 126 plates, numbered 1-9, 9*, 10-39, 40*, 41-78, 78*, 79-123. Recently rebound in half brown calf, brown cloth boards, red title labels to the front board and the spine. This is a defective copy of the 1794 Third Edition of this important book. There are… several significant condition problems - firstly, all leaves prior to page 1 (including the title page) are missing, and the final plate (the folding plate numbered 124/125) is also missing. Secondly, the corners of the text pages are dog-eared, with some loss to many pages (this problem is worse at the front of the book than it is at the back). On the plus side, there is no loss to any of the text or images. Thirdly, there is staining of the contents (this staining is at its worst for the text pages and the first 20 plates). On the plus side, the recent binding has been executed attractively. Not a thing of beauty, but this is an opportunity to obtain an original 18th-century edition of this important book at a fraction of the price of a copy in better condition.

First Edition. Second edition. Folio (13 3/4 x 9 3/16 inches; 351 x 232 mm.). [i]-iv, [2, index], [1]-24, [2, publisher's ads] pp. 127 engraved plates on 126 sheets (numbered 1-125, with 9[*], 78*, and the final double-page plate numbered 124 and 125). Beautifully bound in modern navy blue straight-grain morocco. Boards and spin…es heavily tooled and embellished in gilt. Boards with circular corner devices along edges and urn-shaped inner corner devices. Spine lettered and stamped in gilt. Gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. A bit of intermittent spotting and some slight offsetting from plates. Plate number 91 with a two inch closed tear to the upper margin, not affecting engraving. A beautiful copy. This is perhaps the most rare of the three principle eighteenth-century pattern books (Chippendale and Sheraton being better known). This showcase of furniture design was published after Hepplewhite's death by his wife, Alice, who continued the furniture business as A. Hepplewhite & Co. In addition to numerous furniture patterns for everything from urn stands to beds, the book also includes a double-page plate captioned "Plan of a Room, showing the proper distribution of the furniture." Berlin Catalogue 1233. Brunet III.105. HBS 64830. $6,850.
