On the centennial of the peace treaty that ended the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5, Dartmouth College hosted a conference to examine the background and making of that treaty and its long-term implications for international relations. Over forty North American, Japanese, and Russian scholars and practitioners participated in the forum. The Treaty of Portsmouth and Its Legacies presents eight outstanding conference papers, revised for publication, and two additional papers solicited to round out the scholarship. Together these papers illuminate diplomacy before and after the war, the peace process, the political and cultural legacies of Portsmouth, and the treaty's significance for Asia-Pacific relations today. …

Most of these exceptional paintings, prints and books have never before been shown outside Boston. Written by leading scholars and illustrated throughout in colour, the essays and detailed commentaries in this volume examine the images as vivid records of the leisure pursuits of the townsman class emerging within Japanese feudal society at the time. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. nside the Floating World presents an overview of Japanese social history from the seveenteenth through nineteenth centuries using images of children, actors, courtesans, and landscape. All of the most eminent woodblock artists are featured, including Hiroshige, Hokusai, and Utmaro. In the last two decades, visual culture of our own time has come under the scrutiny of specialists from such diverse disciplines as anthropology, sociology, film studies, psychology, comparative literature studies, and art history. Methodologies and critical practices have emerged from each discipline that focus on the wide range of experiences contemporary visual culture offers to its consumers. Inside the Floating World affords a unique opportunity to bring these recent critical approaches to bear on the historical and aesthetic issues surrounding Japanese printmaking. The book serves as both an introduction to and a serious explication of the social meanings imbedded in Japanese prints. 2.…

The dust jacket shows wear marks, edge wear, scuffs and scratches. Interior with minor signs of wear.; The ukiyo-e artist Isoda Koryusai produced thousands of designs between 1769 and 1781, a crucial period in the evolution of the print tradition, and was honored with the imperial title of hokkyo, yet he has been long neglected by scholars. Allen Hockley has identified more than 2,500 designs of wide-ranging formats and themes, demonstrating that Koryusai broadened the treatment of traditional print subjects and appealed to a wider and more varied audience. Koryūsai's sheer output suggests he may very well be the most productive artist of the eighteenth century. Refuting outmoded paradigms of connoisseurship and challenging the assumptions of conventional print scholarship, Allen Hockley elevates this important figure from the status of a minor Edo-period artist. He argues that Koryūsai excelled by the most significant measure he was a highly successful creator of popular commodities. Employing an "active audience" model, Hockley reshapes the study of ukiyo-e as a scholarly discipline by assessing Koryusai 's significance from the perspective of consumer culture. While scholars will be intrigued by Hockley's groundbreaking arguments, general readers will be fascinated by Koryūsai's richly varied career. Five appendixes catalog all of the artist's known print designs, forming a record of Koryusai's works that will serve as a lasting reference text for collectors, dealers, and curators. …

The exhibition and catalogue explore the intertwined worlds of art, popular culture, commerce and society of Edo Japan in a focused examination by a team of renowned experts." excerpt from the preface by Vishahka N.
