The bindings of both books are completely perished (gone, disappeared). The good news. The text blocks of both volumes are complete with all pages, maps, illustrations and the sewing is sound with no loose pages falling out. The folding plate facing page 374 in vol 1 is present but laid in loose. No marks to the pages. No foxing. Inquiries welcome.

Endpapers foxed, some foxing to frontispieces but largely noticeable to the reverse, some light age toning to the margins, a few creases to the maps where incorrectly folded but no tears; overall internally good.

Half plum morocco over ochre cloth boards, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered, compartments decorated in gilt, all edges gilt. Very light toning and occasional very light scattered foxing. Generally an excellent example. 8 full page colour lithographs, 1 full-page plate depicting inscription, large (29 x 57 cm) folding colour map of Palestine, 4 maps on folding sheet (overall 24 x 29 cm) depicting Jerusalem and Galilee. The author's "principal object" is to "call attention to the extraordinary nature of the Dead Sea, to account for its probable formation and to show how it may be made the means of ocmmunication with our East Indian possessions." (Preface).
