Sehr schönes Lehrbuch, durch das man sich von zwei Seiten durcharbeiten kann: hinten angefangen geht es vom hebräischen Alphabet über leicht lesbare Texte bis zu schwierigeren Lektionen, auch einige Lieder sind abgedruckt; von vorne angefangen erfährt man viel Wissenswertes zur Geschichte der ji…ddischen Sprache und Dichtung. Dieses Buch ist sowohl für VHS-Kurse u.ä. als auch zum Selbststudium geeignet. Wie der Buchtitel andeutet, besteht dieses Buch aus zwei Teilen: 1. Da ist zunächst einmal der "jiddische Teil", der von hinten zur Buchmitte hin gelesen wird. Dieser Teil ist ein Lehrbuch und beginnt mit einer Einführung in das hebräische Alphabet und die Phonetik der Sprache. Hauptsächlich beinhaltet er kleine Lesestücke (in steigender Progression) mit ausführlichen Erklärungen, Vokabeln und ein wenig Grammatik. Die Texte der ersten Lektionen und alle Liedtexte sind als Lesekontrolle für Autodidakten transkribiert. Sehr nützlich ist ein alphabetisches Vokabelverzeichnis am Ende dieses Teils. 2. Der erste Teil des Buches (Lesebuch) bietet eine interessante Darstellung der Entstehung und Weiterentwicklung des Jiddischen, seiner Protagonisten und Gegner, seiner Stellung im Spannungsfeld der Landessprachen West- und Osteuropas und der hebräischen Sprache. Sodann folgen Abschnitte über klassische jiddische Schriftsteller und ihre Werke (z. B. Mendele Mojcher Sforim) und über die neuere jiddische Literatur (z.B. Isaak Bashevis Singer). Abschließend sind noch Literaturhinweise und ein Glossar eingefügt. Dieses Buch hätte m.E. auf jeden Fall eine Neuauflage verdient!
