Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Good. 2nd Edition. Original blue printed wraps 14 x 21cm. (4) + 196pp. Printed at the East African Standard in Nairobi in 1944. Wraps good only - grubby and marked with short tears. Interiors quite heavily tanned economy wartime paper with occasional marks, light creasing and tears. Previous owner's signature to front wrap (indecipherable) and a different signature to title page (Giocondo Galli). Italian - English vocabulary and grammar, published under the auspices of the World's Committee of the YMCA, Geneva, for free distribution to Italian prisoners of war in East Africa under its War Prisoners' Aid programme. The author is credited as a Captain in the Alpini. This elite mountain infantry force was created in 1872 to protect Italy's borders with France, Austria-Hungary and Switzerland, but became engaged in numerous campaigns in Africa, including Eritrea (1887-88), the 1st Italo-Ethiopian War (1895-96), the Italo-Turkish War in Libya and its aftermath (1911-14), the 2nd Italo-Ethiopian War (1935-36) which saw the creation of Italian East Africa, and the East African / Abyssinian Campaign during WWII (1940-43) which brought Italian East Africa to an end in 1941 with pockets of resistance up to 1943. The British began to create camps in Kenya in 1941 to accommodate the large number of Italian PoWs from this campaign (some 55,000 during 1941-47), and the YMCA gained access under its War Prisoners Aid programme to provide welfare relief to PoWs, of which this book is a part. In his introductory note addressed to Compagni di prigionia (fellow prisoners), the author thanks the World Association of YMCAs for inviting him to prepare this book, and while warning his readers not to expect a masterpiece (Non vi aspettate un capolavoro), he has endeavoured to compile phrases to help them conduct their work about the Camp and on farms, and to escape boredom and idleness. His scope is broader than this however, as he has included numerous military, aeronautical, and marine words and commands, as well as sections on geography, photography, and the Roman Catholic Church. There is also a YMCA mission statement and publication list inside the back wrap and a commemoration of the YMCA's centenary on the copyright page. The title page indicates 20 Migliaio (20 Thousand), of which 10,000 of this revised and enlarged 2nd edition and 10,000 of the first edition (indicated inside back wrap). This suggests a large print run, however, very few appear to have survived, and this is now very rare - just 2 other copies traced of this edition only, including 1 on Copac (Natural History Museum) and one in a private collection (giancarloalbertini). No OCLC record found, or reference to the first or any other edition.
