Smith 5206 Jewitt was an English armorer on board the American ship Boston that landed in Nootka Sound in March of 1803. Chief Maquinna and the natives ended up slaughtering the Captain and all of the crew except Jewitt and the sail maker John Thompson. Upon escaping and making his way back to Boston, Jewitt published his narrative under the title A Journal Kept at Nootka Sound. This later enhanced edition is based on conversations with Jewitt. All of the early editions are quite scarce, especially in reasonable condition. This copy was owned by Frederick A. Cook who signed the top of the title page. An interesting association copy.

An expanded version of Jewitt's very rare Journal Kept at Nootka Sound (Boston, 1807), the "first printed account of a remarkable captivity among natives of the Northwest coast" (Howes). "Amongst the best-known and most popular of t…he early narratives of adventure and experience on the western coast. The Boston, captained by John Salter with a crew of twenty-six men, including Jewitt as armourer, reached Vancouver Island in 1803. While trading at Nootka Sound, the vessel was seized by natives because the captain had insulted their chief, Maquinna, and all her crew were massacred with the exception of Jewitt and his comrade John Thompson. The two were eventually rescued in 1805 by Captain Hill of the Lydia" (Hill). First published in Boston in 1807 under the title Journal Kept at Nootka Sound, the work was substantially edited and augmented by Richard Alsop in 1815, "so amplified as to be considered a different book" (Howes). Alsop's work provides much information concerning the life and habits of the Indians of Vancouver Island, including a one-page Nootka-English vocabulary and the war song of the Nootka tribesmen. This New York printing is preceded by two scarce Middletown, Connecticut editions of the same year. The original Journal published in Boston is all but unobtainable, with no copy on the market in nearly half a century.
