Es lag daher nahe, die Bemühungen zu vereinen und die Vorbereitungen gemeinsam in Angriff zu nehmen, deren Ergebnis zunächst im Museum Folkwang Essen und anschließend in der Skulpturengalerie der Staatlichen Museen Preußischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin gezeigt wird. Selbstverständlich vermag eine derartige Ausstellung kein endgültiges Ergebnis zu zeitigen. Die Forschung ist im Fluß, die Fälschung nicht minder. Auch unterlag die Auswahl der Objekte einigen Beschränkungen: Nicht jeder Sammler, jedes Museum zeigt gerne gerade das, was sich bei näherer Prüfung als unecht erwies; manches spektakuläre Objekt ist zudem aus Gründen, die zu respektieren sind, noch tabu. Keinesfalls geht es uns bei dieser Ausstellung um vordergründige Sensation. Die Absicht ist, einen Bereich musealer Alltagsarbeit zu präsentieren: die Vielfalt der Probleme des Materials und der Zeitstile, die unterschiedlichen Arten der Fälschung von der Kopie in einem anderen Material bis zur pfiffigen Verfälschung eines ursprünglich authentischen Kunstwerks, dazu die kunsthistorischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Möglichkeiten der Entlarvung, aber auch das, was zwischen echter Rezeption und böswilliger Täuschung noch ungeklärt bleibt oder inzwischen rehabilitiert werden konnte. Die Ausstellung gliedert sich in vier Komplexe, die jeweils selbständig konzipiert wurden: Antike ? Kunstgewerbe und Skulptur ? Graphik ? Malerei. Ihnen ist eine Dokumentation naturwissenschaftlicher Untersuchungsmöglichkeiten angeschlossen, die Dr. Josef Riederer, Leiter des Rathgen- Forschungslabors, Berlin, zusammengestellt hat. Der Katalog folgt dieser Anordnung. Über juristische Aspekte der Fälschung informiert Hans-Joachim Fürste, Verwaltungsdirektor der Staatl. Museen Preußischer Kunstbesitz, Berlin. Dr. Inge Zacher, Düsseldorf, berichtet über das Fälschungsarchiv, das sie mit Unterstützung der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft aufbaut. Die Bibliographie stellte Dr. Bernd Schälicke, Berlin, zusammen. Die Verfasser der Katalogtexte sind gesondert angeführt. Die Redaktion besorgte Dr. Klaus Ertz, Essen, mit Unterstützung von Frau Christa Nitze. Ihren fachlichen Rat stellten die Kollegen vom Rheinischen Landesmuseum Bpnn, Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf, Kunstgewerbemuseum Köln und vom Deutschen Ledermuseum Offenbach sowie die Herren G. Beck, Hamburg, und A. R. A. Hobson, London, liebenswürdigerweise zur Verfügung. Ihnen allen sei hier nachdrücklich gedankt, nicht zuletzt den Leihgebern, die nicht nur Falsifikate, sondern auch authentische Stücke als Vergleichsbeispiele großzügig zur Verfügung stellten.
