Sebbene con potenza si intenda spesso il potere, o la forza, esiste anche un'altra interpretazione che rimanda all'idea di possibilità, o facoltà. Si tratta di due paradigmi filosofici alternativi che in Hobbes si incontrano e scontrano con un esito che determina larga parte della modernità. È infatti l'unione tra meccanicismo e determinismo - e non tanto il presunto assolutismo politico - che determina l'identificazione tra potenza e potere nel pensiero hobbesiano: potenza non indica allora ciò che ha la possibilità di diventare, ma ciò che ha la necessità di diventare. Questa interpretazione deterministica della potenza ha avuto rilevanza all'interno di un elemento della vita moderna che Hobbes aveva intravisto, ma che non poteva immaginare nella forma in cui essa si è poi realizzata: la tecnica, che oggi costituisce il linguaggio della politica e dell'economia, mettendo così in crisi ogni vera ipotesi di mutamento. È però necessario ricordare che - se non vogliamo chiudere ogni spazio di progettualità sociale per vivere o in un «eterno presente» o nel delirio narcisistico dell'individuo isolato - è con una diversa concezione di potenza che la filosofia dovrebbe oggi fare i conti.
