Founded in 2002, Forum Books began as a way to inform and contribute to the national dialogue and political discourse. It is now one of the leading publishers of politically conservative authors and points of view. The advertising trade card first appeared around 1700. From the beginning, trade cards used visual appeal and wit to attract customers' attention. Initially, American trade cards were modeled after English examples. Eighteenth century trade cards promoted luxury goods made by skilled craftsmen and were targeted to a sophisticated group of consumers. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, American printers developed imaginary new approaches to advertising trade cards. The printing of trade cards spread to the countryside from the large urban printing centers of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. Business clients wanted quick, local access to their printers. In the 1820s, lithography challenged engraving as the principal commercial printing medium. Large press runs at low cost were possible. When the ability to print in several colors occurred in the 1860s, lithograph printing of trade cards became dominant. Louis Prang was a leader in this movement. The Golden Age of the advertising trade card was the 1880s and 1890s. A collecting craze developed. Albums were created to hold the cards. Manufacturers issued cards in series as a means of continuing to attract repeat customers. Exchanges among friend occurred nationwide. Although advertising trade cards were used internationally, they reached their greatest development in America. In the last quarter of the nineteenth century, America enjoyed a favorable balance of trade with the world. America moved from fourth to first in manufactured goods worldwide between 1860 and 1894, at which time it out-produced England, France, and Germany combined. Enormous growth in consumer goods, improved transportation, new inventions, and consumer demand led to marketing bonanza. The newspaper and periodical literature of the era still printed primarily in black and white. Many had a very conservative advertising policy. Advertisers preferred posters and trade cards because of their great appeal as well as freedom from editorial consultants. Individuals obtained trade cards either at point-of-purchase (that is to say, they were included in the packaging) or directly from the shopkeeper. In many cases, the shopkeeper had his address printed on the back of a stock card or added it with a rubber stamp. By the mid-1890s, the Golden Age of the advertising trade card was ending. The United States Postal Service reduced second class mail rates, opening the door to mass distribution of magazines and periodicals. By 1900, 160 leading monthly magazines enjoyed a circulation of over 157,000. Advertising in these periodicals increased by hundreds of percent in the 1880s and 1890s. By the end of the 1890s, many manufacturers inserted full-page, colored lithograph prints in periodicals. Increased magazine advertising coupled with the trend to monopolies, replacement of the small shop keeper by large department stores, and the growth of mail order, ended the advertising trade card era. In addition, the American lithograph industry was undercut by German printers. By 1900, advertising postcards, many printed abroad, played a far more important role in advertising merchandise than advertising trade cards. Single sheet, printed on both sides Presumed First Edition, with multiple impressions.
