Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: For sixty years, from 1260 to 1323, the Mamluk state in Egypt and Syria was at war with the Ilkhanid Mongols based in Persia. This is the first comprehensive study of the political and military aspects of the early years of the war, from the battle of 'Ayn Jalut in 1260 to the battle of Homs in 1281. In between these campaigns, the Mamluk-Ilkhanid struggle was continued in the manner of a 'cold war' with both sides involved in border skirmishes, diplomatic manoeuvres, and espionage. Here, as in the major battles, the Mamluks usually maintained the upper hand, establishing themselves as the foremost Muslim power at the time. By drawing on previously untapped Persian and Arabic sources, the author sheds new light on the confrontation, examining the war within the context of Mongol/Mamluk relations with the Byzantine Empire, the Latin West and the Crusading states.(Publisher).

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The Mongol Empire was founded by Chinggis Khan in the early thirteenth century. Within the span of two generations it embraced most of Asia, thus becoming the largest land-based state in history. The united empire lasted only until around 1260, but the major successor states continued for many generations, in the Middle East, present-day Russia, Central Asia and China. It left a lasting impact on these areas and their peoples, which was often far from negative! The papers in this volume offer fresh perspectives on the Mongol Empire, its rule in the eastern Islamic world, Central Asia and China, and the legacy of this rule. Various authors approach the matter from a variety of views, including political, military, social, cultural and intellectual. In doing so, they shed a new light on the Mongol Empire. This publication has also been published in hardback, please click here for details.

'The present volume presents the results of probe and salvage excavations carried out in several areas north of the White Mosque in Ramla. The archaeological remains discovered reflect a clear stratigraphic/chronological continuity from the first half of the eighth until the eleventh century. The earliest remains, of at least two large buildings and installations, date from the establishment of the city in the Umayyad period during the first half of the eighth century. The discovery of a large quantity of metal slag and of numerous furnaces, water channels, and cisterns, all dating from the late eighth to the eleventh century (the Abbasid and Fatimid periods), points to the existence of a large industrial area built alongside residential areas. Settlement at the site was interrupted at the height of its development by an earthquake in the mid eleventh century. Late Islamic small finds, along with a near lack of architectural remains, point to later settlement of a merely transitory nature in this period. The rich finds from the excavation contribute much to the understanding of Ramla s historical and urban development. Chapters are devoted to the extensive assemblages of pottery, glass, coins, metal artifacts, metallurgical remains, stone vessels, clay figurines, and bone artifacts. To date, this is the largest and most comprehensive of the archaeological reports published on excavations in Ramla, and it is sure to serve as a tool for a wide range of future scholarly research.' CONTENTS: Pt. 1. Introduction / Oren Gutfeld -- pt. 2. Architecture and stratigraphy / Oren Gutfeld -- pt. 3. The finds. The ceramic evidence / Katya Cytryn-Silverman -- The islamic glass vessels / Yael Gorin-Rosen -- The coins / Nitzan Amitai-Preiss -- The metal artifacts / Elias Khamis -- Investigation of pyro-technological, metallurgical, and associated material / Matthew J. Ponting -- The stone artifacts / Rachel Laureys-Chachy -- The clay figurines / Naama Vilozny -- The bone artifacts / Oren Gutfeld, Ravit Nenner-Soriano.
