Original publisher's full parchment gilt ruled border on upper cover top edge gilt lettered gilt on spine and upper cover. Uncut. Light blue glazed endpapers. Slip with additional…biographical information tipped in. An additional title page reads: 'A Mixture of Harmless Ingredients for the Relief of Melancholia, Lassitude, and those disorders which are apt to arise from any Wrong Action about the Heart, &c.' A work published posthumously by a doctor of Huguenot descent, Thomas Edward Amyot (1817-1895) who practised at Diss in Norfolk for around fifty years. He was educated at Westminster School, studied at St. Thomas' Hospital and was a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons. He married Elizabeth Howes, daughter of the Rev Francis Howes, Minor Canon of Norwich Cathedral. He had many interests apart from publishing articles on medical matters, such as chess, literature and music. The poems and a couple of prose pieces are on a variety of subjects and range from the serious and religious to the humorous. Newspaper reviews loosely inserted. A couple of minor marks on upper cover, otherwise a very good copy. Very good.
