Published by George Bell and Sons, Covent Garden London in 1882, this is the assumed 1st edition hardback printing (no subsequent printing dates) of W.H.Maxwell's LIFE MILITARY AND CIVIL of the Duke of Wellington: Digested from the Materials of W.H.Maxwell, and in part Re-Writ…ten by AN OLD SOLDIER. with some account of his Public Funeral: Illustrated with Sixteen Highly Finished Line Engravings. 497 pages, red leather binding, gilt lettering, line engravings, gilt page edges, the book is in good condition with some moderate rubbing to the board edges and spine plus the pencil name of a previous owner written at the top of the front free end paper. There is also small occasional areas of crescent shaped browning or staining at the top centre of the book at intervals throughout. All the plates are lovely and intact and the staining is in the top border of perhaps 5 plates, but not in the illustrations themselves. A good copy of a historic book.

All the plates are waterstained, the contents are very slightly weak, neat stamp of a former owner (T.W. Pickard, who was the estate manager at Glynde) in three places including the title page and (very faintly) on the upper cover, large inscription of original owner Frederick Prodger on verso of front endpaper, original orange glazed and printed boards, rubbed and slightly worn, original blue cloth spine, a little worn. EXTREMELY RARE.
