(12731) L'intervento di Ancona, prof. del Politecnico di Milano e deputato al Parlamento, è a favore dello Spluga, contro il Greina, sia…per la sua importanza militare ("avendo noi in casa solo i 2 imbocchi del Sempione e del Cenisio, mentre il Gottardo è completamente fuori dal suolo italiano, e così il Brennero . e lo Spluga è l'unico passaggio centrale al quale si arrivi da terra italiana"), sia perché è la via più diretta tra due nazioni, l'Italia e la Germania, per lo scambio delle loro attività e dei loro prodotti. "Che gli Svizzeri non ne siano entusiasti si capisce. Essi dicono: Come? Un altro ponte italo-tedesco, più breve, sul quale comanderemo metà l'Italia e metà noi? No! Non c'è già il vecchio ponte del Gottardo sul quale comandiamo noi soli? Ed al caso si faccia il Greina, pel quale continueremo a comandare da soli". Al fine tabelle di confronto dei prezzi di trasporto delle merci in Lire/tonnellata via Spluga (calcolate dal Comitato milanese per lo Spluga) e via Greina.

Partendo dalle gallerie dell'antichit…à, scavate con mazze e scalpelli (come quella del Fucino, voluta da Claudio, o quella Augustea sotto il contrafforte di Posillipo), l'A. passa poi a ricordare quelle ferroviarie, costruite col lavoro di mina, come la galleria sotto il Tamigi del 1825, quelle della Manchester-Liverpool del 1826-30, della Colonia-Aquisgrana del '37, della Napoli-Capodimonte del '40, per arrivare infine a quelle costruite con la perforazione meccanica, come quella del Frejus e quella del Sempione, scavata tra il 1895 e il 1900, tra gravissime e impreviste difficoltà, di cui l'Ancona narra la drammatica storia e fornisce le caratteristiche tecniche. Tra le ill. fotografiche al fine il ritratto dell'ing. Brandau, gli imbocchi nord e sud, i cantieri, la squadra della "avanzata", la perforatrice Brandt, Briga e la sua stazione, il villaggio dei minatori a Balbanolesca, il treno inaugurale etc.
