Decorative Cloth. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A near fine copy in the original decorative cloth binding with 20 hand coloured plates by G B Sowerby. This volume is part of Lovell Reeve's Popular Natural History series designed for young people and those starting out to study the natural world. The dark green cloth binding has gilt decoration and titles to the spine and a gilt crab design to the front board, with blind stamped decoration to both boards. The binding is very bright with bright gilt on both the board and the spine. There is light pulling to the bottom spine end and a tiny bump to the top corner of the front board. The top spine has some pulling and a small scuffed area where the cloth has been pierced in 3 tiny spots. There is the entertaing bookplate of Edward Braxton Reynolds, Public Analyst, with a decorative snake, spider and skull design and the motto 'There was death in the pot' on the front pastedown endpaper. Contents with half title; tissue-guarded frontispiece; title; preface and plate list xii pp; text and index pp 1- 358 with 19 further plates, and publisher's advert 2pp at the rear. The contents are in lovely clean condition. There is pale brown marking in the gutter of p 94 where an old page marker has been kept and a tiny bottom edge tear at p 193/4.
