Contents in this copy, Book the First-Early Life, 1794-1831, Book the Second-Across the plains to Oregon and the return home by Cape Horn, 1832-1835, "Book the Third-Michigan in the making, 1836-1857, Book the Fourth-Civil War, travels at home and abroad, later life. Ball was also known to be the first American school teacher in Oregon. He also wrote the fist account of the geology of Oregon. He was a key figure in creating Michigan's public School system.
