His early life is an intimate picture of the New Hampshire family with a large family. In 1832, he joined Capt. Wyetg on a trip to Oregon, Then he becam a passenger on a whaling vessel. This autobiography is compile by his daughters, Kate Ball Powers, Flora Ball Hopkins and Lucy Ball. Contents in this copy, Book the First-Early Life, 1794-1831, Book the Second-Across the plains to Oregon and the return home by Cape Horn, 1832-1835, "Book the Third-Michigan in the making, 1836-1857, Book the Fourth-Civil War, travels at home and abroad, later life. Ball was also known to be the first American school teacher in Oregon. He also wrote the fist account of the geology of Oregon. He was a key figure in creating Michigan's public School system. Copy has a yellow dust jacket with and black and white photograph of the statue of Ball with two children. Dust jacket has several small rubbed spots and a small soiled mark on the front and back covers. Edge of front cover is slightly chipped. Copy is very clean. Pages are very clean and complete. Binding is tight.
