Ephemera. Condizione: Very Good Plus. A veteran's mendicant palm card, together with a letterpress poem card, both circa 1921. Palm card printed in black ink onto thin paper, 5 inches tall x 3 inches wide, with a veteran's mendicant poem and titled "Disabled Soldiers Appeal", lightly soiled and twice folded, having wear consistent with expected use, verso blank. The poem card "Victory, an answer to In Flander's Fields" has a single halftone image printed at top showing the statue "Angel of Victory" by Montreal sculptor Coeur de Lion McCarthy. It is further enhanced by three-color letterpress for both text and illustrations. Card measures 10 inches tall x 7-1/4 inches wide, has light wear, creases and soil with two pin holes at top. The decorative poem card commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919, which officially ended five years of conflict. The three "Angel of Victory" statues commissioned by the CPR in 1921 were for their stations in Winnipeg, Vancouver and Montreal. Our research shows the angel statue in Vancouver is holding an incomplete version of the laurel wreath over the soldier's head and, if printed in Quebec, it would quite likely be printed in French/English or French only. This leads us to consider the possibility that these items originated in Winnipeg, Manitoba whose statue has a complete laurel wreath.
