Humphry objects that 'It is not desirable that the Undergraduates at so early a period of their career, should be invited to compete together for a great prize.' Aggiungi al carrelloNA. Wooden rods. Condizione: Fair. First Edition. Scarce scroll map -- we could locate no copies of this, the first edition of this map, and only a few of a later edition. Read below. Measuring 59 by 83.5 cm, excluding the wooden rods at the top and bottom. Hand-coloring. Upper corner by title, and the equivalent of a title cartouche, is an allegorical illustration. Inset maps of New York City as it existed at the time -- the lower part of Manhattan, and of Niagara Falls and its vicinity. Also insets of xxxxxx There are no copies of this 1834 edition listed on OCLC First Search. There are two copies of a 1836 edition -- Yale and Duke -- listed on OCLC, but this version would appear to be somewhat smaller than ours, as they purportedly measuring only 52 by 70 cm, compared to our scroll map which measures 59 by 83.5 cm, excluding the wooden rods at the top and bottom. And even if we discount the wide margins of ours, and assume the listed copies had no margins, these others don't line up with ours precisely. The New York Public Library also has a listing for the map, but as an Internet Resource, and thus not as a physical copy. Regardless, it is obvious the map is a true rarity. Very dry, with a good number of surface tears. Also significant darkening or browning. The coloring, which was done by hand, is now mostly obscured, so counties, which were differentiated by color, are now more set apart from one another by darker or lighter. Only upon a closer look can one perceive the intended color. However, we will also note that the New York Public Library's digital image of the 1835 edition of this map isn't much different in terms of the preservation of color, and we would also note that its map has more or less the same issues of browning and the like.…
