Cuando, en la primavera de 1919, André Breton y Philippe Soupault conciben y experimentan el método de escritura del que nacerán no sólo Los campos magnéticos, sino también los textos «automáticos» de la historia del movimiento surrealista, el primero tiene 23 años y el segundo 22. Cuenta André Breton: «La práctica cotidiana de la escritura automática a veces le dedicábamos, Soupault y yo, de ocho a diez horas consecutivas nos llevó a observaciones de gran alcance, pero que sólo se coordinarían y se aprovecharían totalmente más tarde. Aun así vivíamos en plena euforia, casi en estado de ebriedad por descubrir sin cesar (. . . ).
