Alles, was im Deutschland der Zwischenkriegszeit Rang und Namen als Schriftsteller, Journalist und Polemiker hatte, traf sich im "Tage-Buch": Klaus Mann, Thomas Mann, Alfred Polgar, Egon Friedell, Joseph Roth, Robert Musil, Hermann Broch, Max Brod u. v. a. Knapp ein Jahr nach Gründung stieß der Wirtschaftsjournalist Leopold Schwarzschild zu Grossmann und kommentierte von da an den politischen und wirtschaftlichen Niedergang der Republik so scharfsinnig wie nur wenige andere. Als Schwarzschild 1933 nach Paris emigrieren musste und mit Hilfe eines holländischen Anwaltes dort "Das Neue Tage-Buch" begründete, etablierte er sich von Anfang an als die verlässlichste Quelle für die Vorgänge im Dritten Reich und die Pläne von Hitlers Deutschland - und das in einem Ausmaß, dass weder Winston Churchill noch das französische Außenministerium auf die Lektüre der Zeitschrift verzichten konnten. Das vorliegende Buch dokumentiert diese Unverzichtbarkeit und führt den Leser an die Katastrophe der ersten Jahrzehnte des 20. Jahrhunderts heran." (Verlagstext) Das Tage-Buch war eine unabhängige, überparteiliche deutsche Wochenschrift, die von Januar 1920 bis März 1933 veröffentlicht wurde. Sie wurde von dem linksliberalen Wiener Publizisten und Theaterkritiker Stefan Großmann unter der Mithilfe des Verlegers Ernst Rowohlt gegründet und herausgegeben. 1922 stieß der aus Frankfurt am Main stammende Journalist Leopold Schwarzschild zur Redaktion hinzu, der nach dem Abtritt Großmanns alleiniger Herausgeber wurde. Schwarzschild musste 1933, von den Nationalsozialisten bedroht, nach Frankreich ins Exil gehen. Dort publizierte er bis zum Einmarsch der Deutschen 1940 die Fortsetzung Das Neue Tage-Buch. Leopold Schwarzschild (* 8. Dezember 1891 in Frankfurt am Main; gestorben 2. Oktober 1950 in Santa Margherita Ligure, Italien) war ein deutscher Publizist und Soziologe. Nach ersten journalistischen Berufserfahrungen beim Frankfurter Generalanzeiger ging Schwarzschild nach Berlin und publizierte ab 1922 zusammen mit dem aus Wien stammendem Publizisten Stefan Großmann die von diesem 1922 gegründete Zeitschrift Das Tage-Buch, das aus linksliberaler Sicht kritisch die Entwicklung der Weimarer Republik beleuchtete. Das Tagebuch war ein inhaltlich "hochwertiges Medienprodukt". Fritz Raddatz hebt hervor, dass die "grünen Hefte sich wie eine grandiose Geschichte der Weimarer Republik lesen." 1923 gründeten Schwarzschild und Großmann die Wochenzeitung M. M. - Der Montag Morgen. Nach einer schweren Erkrankung Großmanns wurde Schwarzschild 1928 alleiniger Herausgeber des Tage-Buches und bis 1931 von Der Montag Morgen, den er in der Weltwirtschaftskrise verkaufen musste.
