Il ferrarese Talassi (1750-1804) fu cantante e poeta estemporaneo, e viaggiò in Italia, in Inghilterra, in Germania e soprattutto in Francia, esibendosi come poeta improvvisatore. Trascorse gli ultimi anni della sua vita a Lisbona, continuando la sua produzione poetica. Il poema è un pretesto per ripercorrere, attraverso le fitte note, i suoi viaggi in diverse contrade e tessere l'elogio dei tanti personaggi da lui conosciuti (ebbe anche uno scambio epistolare con Elisabeth Montagu); e questa è la parte più interessante del libro.
