Photo, 5.5 x 9cms, good condition. According to AI: "[The] image shows a portrait of John Tyndall, a prominent 19th-century Irish physicist and mountaineer, taken around 1872 by the photography studio Elliott & Fry." But it hasn't the card backup and printed description and ascription of the Elliott & Fry issue. And has nothing to indicate that it ever had that feature.

She thanks Lynd for 'one of the nicest novel articles we have had in Gerald's absence', and asks her to 'be an angel, and do something else for Viola, who is vanishing tomorrow for four or five weeks', in reviewing 'the Somerset Maugham book you wanted [.] I really think he is worth a long article to himself - 1500 words, and, if you care to, you can put in a word for Heinemann's edition of the Collected Works, which we send alongside. Mr. Bell will be in charge, and Miss Francis if you let her know will take care of proofs, and so on, but I shall count on your doing it'.

"Mr Triphook/ I called yesterday at Cary's for a Map, & He [sic] informed, that there is an excellent English Gazet[t]eer lately published by Capper, & printed for Baldwin Pater Noster Row - I have long sought for one, & will be much obliged to you to look out for that for me - / And I am sure you can procure me the last Eton School List, now their Vacation has commenced. I wish you make Enquiry at the Heralds [sic] Office about Sr George Naylers Work of the Coronation. I do not despair of it, because I've a considerable Grant from Parliament to ye work." Note: Nayler's Coronation first pubd 1824; Benjamin Petts Capper, A Topographical Dictionary of the United Kingdom . . . accompanied by forty-six maps (1825; later eds 1826 and 1829). Note: "Viscount Harburton" (sic] is in "A Dictionary of English Book-Collectors".

The recipient Philip Dosse (Guinness spells it 'Dossé') was proprietor of Hansom Books, publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including Books and Bookmen and 'Plays and Players'. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Large signature, underlined. Reads: 'Thankyou! [sic] I should be glad to review "Lost Demesnes" and "Classic Irish Houses" by Craig (see the enclosed) if it is sent to you.'.

Such touching appreciation, and from you, repays us for the anxiety attending the publication of the Memoir [.] This part of Sussex seems very forsaken since you & your husband left it. If you are ever near, what a pleasure a call from you would be - or a visit, if your freedom allowed it. To be with you in The Press is a great deal, but is also tantalizing.' Autograph Note by Lynd's daughter Maire Gaister at head of first page, stating 'We did visit them when we lived at Steyning, Sussex, 1918-22'.

Sligo was appointed Governor of Jamaica in 1834. His efforts on behalf of the recently-emancipated slaves (including the financing of two schools) caused him to become unpopular with the plantation owners, and he was effectively ousted in 1836. 2pp, 12mo. Twenty-one lines of text. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded for postage. Small square of paper with engraving of the family crest laid down at the foot of the second page. Addressed to 'My Dear Sir' and signed 'Sligo'. The Marquis's handwriting is somewhat opaque. Begins: 'Mr [Bailey?] having taken on himself to say that you might give me the Sixty Guineas that I was offered for my box in the remainder of the Season from the 19th of June, or rather from after next Saturday [Evng?] I think that the best way to make matters all right will be to send you a check for Eighty Guineas'. He continues with reference to arrangements for the following year.

3pp, 16mo. On bifolium of laid paper, with armorial watermark. Forty-two lines of text, signed 'Downshire' and addressed 'To / The Princess Charlotte of Wales'. The first five lines are scored through, as is another passage on the first page. The deleted commencement reads: 'Madam. / I hasten to return Yr. R. H. my humble thanks for the kind & gracious reply to my letter which [?] or receiving, in which Yr. R. H. confers upon Lady D. & myself in a manner so peculiarly [?] honour we have most anxiously desired.' The honour in question is 'consenting to be godmother to our little girl who shall be always brought up in every sentiment of respect & affection for her Royal Protector, whose name she will have the Honour of bearing.' The second half of the letter continues in much the same vein. The daughter, Lady Charlotte Augusta Hill (1815-1861), married Sir George Chetwynd.

12mo, 3 pp. Very good on lightly aged paper. Asking whether Gladstone would consent to the placing of his name on the list of the Institute's Council, 'to fill one of the vacancies'. 'You would be of great service to us in so doing - and the calls on your time would not be numerous - about a dozen times a year'. Six lines in shorthand (by Gladstone?) on the reverse of the second leaf of the bifolium.

See her entry, and his, in the Oxford DNB. On the reverse of a colour postcard of the Radcliffe Camera in Oxford from the Old Bodleian. In fair condition, lightly aged and with slight creasing to one corner and at the head (not affecting text). To the right, in the section reserved for the address, she writes: 'Hardy / with all very / best wishes & love / from / Iris !'. Beneath this is a pencil note identifying Amies as the recipient. At top left, in another hand (her husband John Bayley's?) is written 'Born before all time: / a dispute over Christ's origin / Karl Joseph Kuschel'. Kuschel's book was published in 1992. See IMage.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. An unillustrated post card, apart from the letterhead. Addressed, with stamp and Paddington postmark, to 'Dr William Roberts / Briarlea / Mortimer / Berks.' The message reads: 'I vote for Osbert S. [i.e. Osbert Sitwell] as next chairman Soc. Authors [etc?] / Yrs / C. Day Lewis'. Image on request.

In fair condition, lighty aged and worn, with minor traces of grey paper mount on reverse. Reads: 'Dear Sir. / As I do not consider the sum of two guineas [weekly?] sufficient recompense for your work as Publisher of Social Notes, I offer to pay you the usual per [?] given to Advertizing agents - i e 20 Per Cent upon all advertisements you obtain - 10 per Cent upon receipt of our advertisements and 10 per cent when payments are resumed from the advertizer / trly yours / S C Hall'.

According to Russell's entry in the Oxford DNB, while reporting on the Civil War, he was described by one American newspaper as 'the most famous newspaper correspondent the world has ever seen'. The inscription on his memorial in St Paul's Cathedral calls him ''the first and greatest of War Correspondents'. He coined the phrase 'thin red line', was instrumental in the sending of Florence Nightingale to the Crimea, and is said to have written the report that inspired Tennyson to write 'The Charge of the Light Brigade'. The recipient was the proprietor of the Hotel and Restaurant Henry IV, Saint-Germain-en-Laye (which, according to an advertisement in Galignani's 'New Paris Guide for 1879', was 'The only Hotel on the Terrace. / Highly recommended, and old-established / Louis XIV. was born in this House on the 5th Sept. 1638.'). The present item is 2pp, 12mo. In fair condition, aged and worn, with thin strip of glue from mount along the gutter. Folded twice. Signed 'W H Russell'. He enquires after 'un petit apartment libre pour le lundi ou mardi en cas de besoin', at a price 'convenable à ma fortune'. He describes the specifications he requires before noting that M. de Blonetz ma dit ce que j'ai entendu avec plaisir que vous avez garde des souvenirs aimables de moi depuis cet temp terrible 70. 71'. In a postscript he expresses anxiety that 'il y aura une grande foule à St Germain le lundi pour les courses'. It may be that Russell attended the racing with the future King Edward VII: he was, as the Oxford DNB states, 'a member of the Prince of Wales's circle, though his relationship with the prince fluctuated, and he deplored the depravity and obscenity of some of his set'.
