Am politischen, sozialen, kulturellen und alltäglichen Geschehen von der Zeit des letzten deutschen Kaiserreiches bis zum Ende der Nazi-Ze…it nahmen sie regen Anteil. Da die Sternbergs und viele ihrer Freunde jüdischer Herkunft waren, begann für sie ab 1933 ihr Kampf ums Überleben, den einige Familienmitglieder gewannen, während andere in Auschwitz umkamen. Das berühmteste Mitglied der Familie Sternberg, der Rechtsprofessor Theodor Sternberg, lebte und arbeitete ab 1913 in Tokyo. Als Linksintellektueller engagierte sich Sternberg von 1930 ab politisch; damals gewann in Japan der Militarismus die Oberhand und auch der Nationalsozialismus suchte dort Einfluß zu gewinnen. 1937 emigrierte Sternbergs Sohn ebenfalls nach Tokyo. - Mit der vorliegenden Edition werden zum ersten Mal Briefe aus dem Nachlaß Theodor Sternbergs veröffentlicht. Die Briefe stellen authentisch das Leben einer jüdischen Familie dar, die in zwei Kulturen lebte. Sie schließen eine Lücke in der Geschichte jüdischer Emigranten in Japan. Band 79). - Theodor Sternberg (1878-1950) war neben Radbruch und Kantorowicz einer der Vorreiter der Freirechtslehre in Deutschland. Bereits 1904, noch vor seinem Freund Kantorowicz, verö…ffentlichte er seine "Allgemeine Rechtslehre", in der er für das Freirecht eintrat. Er kritisierte die damals herrschende Hermeneutik und Rechtsquellenlehre und stellte ihr eine eigene gegenüber. Sein freirechtliches Konzept basierte auf einer von ihm entworfenen psychologisch-soziologischen Methode, die sich an Wilhelm Wundt anschließt. Dieses Werk fand bei seinen Zeitgenossen, unter anderem bei Ehrlich, gute Aufnahme. 1908 festigte er seinen Ruf als Freirechtler mit seinem Werk "J. H. v. Kirchmann und seine Kritik an der Rechtswissenschaft". 1912 publizierte er seine "Einführung in die Rechtswissenschaft", in der er sich noch stärker für die Freirechtsbewegung einsetzte. Teilweise an Savigny anknüpfend, erkannte er der Rechtswissenschaft bei der Rechtsfindung eine herausragende Position zu. 1913 an die Kaiserliche Universität in Tokyo als Professor für deutsches Recht berufen, setzte er sich weiterhin für das Freirecht ein; sein großer Schülerkreis, zu dem namhafte Rechtswissenschaftler wie Tanaka, Kawashima und Takane zählten, führten seine Theorien fort und verankerten sie in der japanischen juristischen Methodenlehre.
