Erst mit der Aufklärung von deren Struktur und Funktionen fand man den Eingang in die ungeheuer komplizierte, metabolisch und energetisch regulierbare Überstruktur, mit der wir den Begriff Leben verbinden. Oder mit anderen Worten: Man ist fasziniert von einer Welt aus intermolekularen, intrazellulären und interzellulären Wechselwirkungen, die der materiellen Lebensbasis die erforderliche Dynamik verleihen, die Triebkraft sind für Reproduktion, Ontogenese und Evolution. Mit der Erkenntnis kam der Wunsch nach Verfügbarkeit, Beherrschbarkeit und Manipulierbarkeit des Lebens durch den Menschen. Doch dieser geriet, selbst zum Untersuchungsobjekt geworden, in das Dilemma seiner eigenen Verwendbarkeit und Verwertbarkeit. Nicht nur die Physis des Menschen ist gläsem geworden, er scheint auch alle seine Bestandteile der Forschung als Verfügungsmasse zu überlassen. In dieser heutigen Forschungsära, die wir mit dem Überbegriff Biotechnologie beschreiben, suchen wir die Nutzung aller biologischen Potenzen unserer Welt, die wir immer besser zu beherrschen glauben. Wo liegen die Grenzen und Risiken dieser Entwicklung? Und wie beschreiben wir unsere ethische Position, um die Unantastbarkeit der Würde des Menschen zu bewahren?" (Aus der Einführung) Anna Magdalene Wobus geb. Knietsch (* 17. Dezember 1945 in Bad Elster) ist eine deutsche Biologin, bekannt für Stammzellenforschung. Wobus machte zunächst eine Landwirtschaftslehre an einer landwirtschaftlichen Versuchsanstalt bei Leipzig und machte gleichzeitig 1964 das Abitur. Danach studierte sie Biologie und Genetik an der Universität Greifswald unter anderem bei der Genetikerin Elisabeth Günther. Danach war sie am Institut für Pflanzengenetik und Kulturpflanzenforschung in Gatersleben (einem Institut der Akademie der Wissenschaften der DDR) und wurde an der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg promoviert. Sie arbeitete in Gatersleben in einer 1978 gegründeten Forschungsgruppe für Entwicklungsbiologie, die mit Methoden von Beatrice Mintz Teratom-Zellen als Modellsystem untersuchte, und begann dort mit Stammzellenforschung. Seit 1992 leitete sie eine eigene Forschungsgruppe in Gatersleben. 1997 habilitierte sie sich an der Medizinischen Fakultät in Halle. Wobus entwickelte Methoden der Kultivierung und Differentiation embryonaler Stammzellen. Sie studierte die in vitro Differenzierung von embryonalen Stammzellen zum Beispiel zu Zellen des Herzens, der Pankreas und der Leber. Außerdem studierte sie toxikologische Effekte anhand von differenzierten Stammzellen. 2011 erhielt sie mit ihrem Mann die Cothenius-Medaille und 2003 den Wissenschaftspreis: Gesellschaft braucht Wissenschaft (für Arbeiten zu Diabetes und Stammzellen-Therapie). Ulrich Wobus (* 5. März 1942 in Niesky, Provinz Niederschlesien) ist ein deutscher Genetiker, Molekular- und Zellbiologe, der zuletzt das Leibniz-Institut für Pflanzengenetik und Kulturpflanzenforschung in Gatersleben leitete. Wobus betrieb Grundlagenforschung zur Pflanzenphysiologie und -genetik und machte sich um die Anwendung der Erkenntnisse in Biotechnologie und Pflanzenzüchtung verdient.
