First edition. vii, [1], 54pp. With half-title. Contemporary gilt-tooled navy half-morocco, marbled boards. Lightly rubbed and marked, with surface loss to head and foot of spine. Heavy spotting to endpapers, occasional light spotting to text. A later facsimile of the first edition of a satirical biography of 'Mother Wybourn', one of London's most notorious bawds, purportedly written by one 'Anodyne Tanner', a pseudonym intended to represent Francis Tanner, who advertised quack medicine under the sign of the Anodyne Necklace. Interestingly, the bookseller named in the imprint, one 'A. Moore', also never existed - alongside his similarly sketchy brother, 'J. Moore', it seems the two fictitious booksellers were employed most often as pseudonyms for printer Henry Woodfall (1686-1747) and bookseller Thomas Read. Together, the code-names appear on some 600 Grub Street publications between 1713 and 1759, potentially to disguise or obscure illicit, illegal or misleading material. Size: 8vo.…

A handsome little copy bound in later 3/4 black morocco over maroon cloth, raised bands with compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, some spotting to covers, bottom corners of leaves and corners of boards with small area of dampstaining.
