Aggiungi al carrello"Tenth Thousand". 108 pages + 2 illustrated plates & 16 pages of ads. A rare find in something approaching its magazine state, most surviving copies having been fully re-bound at the time. It states "Tenth Thousand" to the illustrated front cover, though the title page and text block give no indication of a reprint. The front cover is chipped, rubbed, foxed and marked, with repairs to the edges. Presumably there would have been a rear cover at one point, this is lacking and the ads to the rear are printed on cheap greyish blue paper, which is incredibly fragile, already chipping to all edges of the latter pages, there have been attempts at repairs to the edges to stabilise them, but they still require handling with care. The text block, printed on good paper stock, is in much better shape, slightly toned, grubby, marked and foxed, with some dog-eared page corners. The whole has been recently re-sewn and bound in hard-wearing limp Dutch Zaansch Board for protection. A Victorian Christmas annual, seven chilling tales, and a frame narrative establishing the conceit that they are being told on board a ship drifting in the mid-Atlantic, in which the authors are cleverly caricatured as passengers without being identified by name. It contains the first appearance of three notable supernatural short stories, Crawford's 'The Upper Berth', Stevenson's 'Markheim' and Anstey's 'Marjory'. Quite an uncommon title in commerce though the Robert Louis Stevenson story means that the attrition rate for a slim, fragile volume of this nature has been less severe than might otherwise have been the case, and copies can be traced in auction over the past century or so. However, examples with any of the outer covers or ads still present are rare indeed.…
