Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Dust Jacket, Both in Very Good condition. Not inscribed and not price clipped.Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. Pictorial Dust Jacket slightly rubbed. 206 Pages. A First Edition copy. There are four illustrations and four Maps. By Way Of The Golden Isles describes the author's journey with his wife and ch…ildren through the inland waterways of France in Ragged Robin, a small auxiliary sailing yacht. This is the sort of voyage which could be undertaken by many people and the book is in no sense a description of an extraordinary undertaking, like drifting across the South Seas on a raft. It is written with humour and a strong awareness of the traps and pitfalls. which await a traveller when he goes off the beaten track. The author describes some of the eccentric people he meets along the route, a fascinating day in the Bordeaux chateaux and the enchanting atmosphere of the beautiful canals of the South. The boat, a modest and unpretentious craft, remains, nevertheless, the focal point of the narrative. At one time it is hundreds of feet above sea-level in the heart of France, at others it glides over bridges above unnavigable rivers or dives under a hill in a four miles long tunnel, or it is riding a boisterous mistral in the Mediterranran or seeking shelter from Atlantic winds in a tiny island in the Bay of Biscay. From first to last, in her journey through France and her sailing along its coasts, Ragged Robin carries her small crew safely through calm and storm and returns home at last to the peaceful waters of the Dart.
