Non pas leur faire croire que TeIl a existé, mais leur permettre de lire les premiers textes que les Suisses ont écrits pour raconter les débuts de leur histoire. Ils sont de toutes sortes : des chroniques, bien sûr, mais aussi une chanson et une pièce de théâtre. Dès 1470, on dispose du plus ancien récit complet de la libération des communautés du Gothard, combinant l histoire de TeIl, de son tir, de la tempête, du meurtre du bailli Gessler, et l histoire du serment du Rütli, du soulèvement populaire, de la prise des châteaux. D autres textes, plus allusifs, les accompagnent : les premières évocations de la révolte à partir de 1420, des pamphlets ou des poèmes humanistes. Une quinzaine de textes au total, écrits durant un siècle (1420-1525). Un siècle de gestation, puis tout le monde se mettra à parler de TeIl et de ses compagnons. C est ce patrimoine que nous avons voulu mettre à portée du public romand en le traduisant, parce que les rares traductions étaient partielles, dispersées et vieillies. L effort de traduction, entrepris dès le milieu du XVIe siècle, a été abandonné après le XIXe siècle. Nous l avons repris, car il faut comprendre les mythes suisses pour comprendre la Confédération. Ils s écrivent au moment où la Suisse s impose comme un pays d Europe, et acquiert à peu près le territoire qu elle a aujourd hui. La Confédération a failli se disloquer à plusieurs reprises ; elle est menacée de l intérieur comme de l extérieur. On lui reproche d être un régime subversif: peuple exalté, princes abaissés. C est pourquoi elle a besoin d une histoire de solidarité et d alliance indestructible, au service d un idéal de liberté et de bon gouvernement. Il en sortira un récit suffisamment entraînant pour convaincre les Suisses pendant près d un demi-millénaire, suffisamment plastique aussi pour répondre aux besoins de la Suisse à chaque époque, avant de jouer un rôle dans l histoire de la liberté à travers le monde." **************************** ref YAch fav101-aa ref 579.
