Contagious and epidemic fevers were widespread at the time, often misdiagnosed and treated with excessive and inappropriate bloodletting, which led to co…untless deaths. The author was among the first to challenge this practice, asserting the origin of these fevers was due to contagion and not miasma. He describes in detail the pernicious symptoms of these fevers, rejecting the dominant theory that they were amenable to treatment by the then highly fashionable Peruvian bark, known as cinchona. Instead, the author's preferred method of treatment was bloodletting and other less drastic interventions. A fascinating and prescient work, this book challenges prevailing medical knowledge of the time about the nature and treatment of epidemics and fevers, reminding us of the ongoing struggle against the spread of infectious disease.
