Once again, many dealers fall into the trap of assuming that, since the only date in this book is the copyright date of 1927, that this is the first U.S, edition, 1927, of this work. Wrong. This unusual detective novel, featuring Jim Beverly, was first published in the UK by Jarrolds in 1927 (hence the copyright date). The U.S. edition was published in the same year by A & C Boni. Although there is little information to be had about The White House Publishers, I believe they were a reprint house, publishing cheap editions of recent genre fiction - mystery, adventure, romance, etc. And this undated edition can't be from 1927 since most of the publisher's other titles listed on the jacket are from 1923 - 1929; meaning that this book couldn't have been published prior to 1929 at the earliest. Anyway, I'm putting this book down as an early reprint of this mystery novel by Marsden (pseudonym of Graham Sutton, 1892-1959). The text block is a little browned and a production flaw has left the leading edge of the front cover slightly wrinkled. But a very good copy indeed in a very good dust jacket, worn and nicked on edges with minor chipping to extremities and a small triangular piece missing from the top of the front panel. The uncredited dust jacket art is by Irving Politzer, an illustrator who specialized in the covers for sheet music and dust jackets in the 1920s and 30s. A nice copy of an uncommon detective novel - albeit a reprint!
