Five raised bands on the spine - no signs of ever having had titles. The book shows its age, with corners lightly worn, tail of the spine worn away, leather on the back hinge is cracked for the lower inch and a half; inner hinges are cracked; first blank pages are stained and worn. Paper is browned, and fragile. A very good copy of this original book (not a reproduction) attributed to François de Salignac de La Mothe- Fà nelon, but there is no reference to that name in the book. The entire title reads: A Dissertation on Pure Love, by The Arch-bishop of Cambray. With An Account of the Life and Writings of the Lady, for whose Sake the Archbishop was banish'd from Court. And the grievous Persecutions she suffer'd in France for her Religion. Also Two Letters in French and English, written by one of the Lady's Maids, during her Confinement in the Castle of Vincennes, where she was a Prisoner Eight Years. One of the Letters was writ with a Bit of Stick instead of a Pen, and Soot instead of Ink, to her Brother; the Other to a Clergyman. Together with an Apologetic Preface, Containing divers Letters of the Archbishop of Cambray, to the Duke of Burgundy, the present French King's Father, and other Persons of Distinction. And divers Letters of the Lady to Persons of Quality, relating to her Religious Principles. Previous owners name and date (1755) on two pages.

Although the title page erroneously states that the work is arranged in twenty-four books the text is in fact contained within ten, as in the first edition of this translation. It is understood that Ozell had contemplated following the revised French edition which adapted a twenty-four book format. pp [1] + [2] + [3] + lxix + 14 + 28 + (iii - xxi) + 320 + 244. plus twelve plates. The text looks to be complete , corresponding with the copy in BL, although a plate and folded map are lacking. The boards look to be contemporary - spine later . In very good condition. An uncommon edition. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
