Paperback. Condizione: New. A long-overdue reassessment of post-1918 Salzburg as a distinct Austrian cultural hub that experimented in moving beyond war and empire into a modern, self-consciously inclusive, and international center for European culture. For over 300 years, Salzburg had its own legacy as a city-state at an international crossroads, less stratified than Europe's colonial capitals and seeking a political identity based in civic participation with its own economy and politics. After World War I, Salzburg became a refuge. Its urban and bucolic spaces staged encounters that had been brutally cut apart by the war; its deep-seated traditions of citizenship, art, and education guided its path.In Interwar Salzburg, contributors from around the globe recover an evolving but now lost vanguard of European culture, fostering not only new identities in visual and performing arts, film, music, and literature, but also a festival culture aimed at cultivating an inclusive public (not an international elite) and a civic culture sharing public institutions, sports, tourism, and a diverse spectrum of cultural identities serving a new European ideal.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Publication: London, Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1952. Formatting: 8vo. Condition Report: Very Good. Housed in its original, unclipped dust jacket (priced 15s. net), which remains remarkably bright and vibrant, exhibiting only the slightest of edge-wear and some minor rubbing along the folds. The green cloth boards are clean, retaining their strong color without any prominent bumping to the corners. The binding is tight and square, holding the text block firmly. Internally, the pages are clean and crisp, largely free from the foxing or toning typically associated with mid-century paper stock. A highly presentable and well-preserved copy. Catalogue Note: First UK edition of Robert Penn Warren's The Circus in the Attic and Other Stories, published by Eyre & Spottiswoode in 1952 following the book's initial US release in 1947. This particular copy stands out for the exceptional preservation of its dust jacket, designed with striking mid-century aesthetics. Early UK editions of Warren's work, particularly his shorter fiction, are increasingly sought after by collectors of Southern Gothic and 20th-century American literature, especially when retaining their original, unclipped wrappers in such bright condition. Bringing together Robert Penn Warren's finest shorter fiction spanning nearly two decades, The Circus in the Attic and Other Stories showcases the profound versatility of one of America's literary titans. The collection is anchored by the masterful title novella, which explores a man's lifelong retreat from a dominating mother and an unfulfilling reality into the intricate, carved world of a circus in his mind. Alongside classics like "Blackberry Winter," these rural chronicles and piercing character studies exhibit the same rich, Southern Gothic atmosphere and moral complexity that earned Warren immense acclaim for All the King's Men. Arens (Dust Jacket) (illustratore).…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu.
