Arent Jan Wensinck était un islamiste, un historien de théologie mystique syriaque et professeur de Semitistica, très apprécié internationalement. Fils de Johan Herman Wensinck, pasteur de l'Eglise réformée hollandaise, et Anna Sara Geertruida Vermeer, Arent Jan Wensinck est né à Aarlanderveen. Après les cours suivants ginnasiali à Amersfoort et Leyden, de 1901, il a commencé à suivre des cours de théologie dans 'Université d'Utrecht.
